Hello world...

Well, I have no idea how long this bloggin malarky will last, but I endeavour to keep this up longer than the last time I attempted yoga (decided that my schedule was just too hectic - nothing to do with the fact that I couldn't feel my legs for a week after).

I guess I will have to share a little about myself on here - well, to begin I think I better 'put out there' (in a Ron Burgandy fashion) that I am in fact a PhD student. My field is in nineteenth-century British art, where I am researching various themes concerning the development of institutions promoting art and intellectual knowledge prevalent during the period. Things are pretty hectic at the moment as I am in my last year and I think this blog is my last attempt at keeping in touch with the outside world - but without having to be physically outside. I apologise now for any rants which may appear, but I hope that these will be punctuated with some of my feeble, probably-not-so-witty-banter.

The name of this blog suggests that I am perhaps partial to a bit of cake...this I do not deny. I LOVE CAKE. Luckily, I like making cake as much as I like to eat it, therefore any calorific value in its consumption is instantly counter-balanced by the physical effort exerted whilst producing it. You may be treated to the odd piccy or two if you're lucky.

My other passion is designer-maker crafts - mainly jewellery and ceramics (both very bad for the bank account). Working with makers in my real-life job has made me realise the amount of effort gone into designing and creating the objects. I will try to share with you all the little gems (excuse the pun) that I come across but I hold no responsibility for any bankruptcies...

Okay, I guess that's enough info for one day...
